“Neil Edwards, CEO of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, is to be the new president of the Honens Piano Competition, effective Sept. 1,” writes Nicholas Beard on Wednesday (6/15) at MusicalAmerica.com. “He succeeds Stephen McHolm, in the job for 12 years; McHolm remains, in the post of artistic director, until the end of 2016. Prior to his five years with Newfoundland, Edwards was executive director of the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival Association and of Debut Atlantic, a presenting organization for emerging artists. Honens Board Chair Eric Friesen called Edwards, ‘an arts leader of vision and practical mastery, with a sterling personal and professional reputation.’ The triennial competition next takes place in 2018. It is named for Esther Honens, for the $5 million she donated in the early 1990s to endow an international piano competition to take place in her hometown of Calgary, Canada.”
