In the July issue of St. Louis Magazine (6/22), St. Louis Symphony President and CEO Marie-Hélène Bernard is named the Editors’ Choice Arts Leader for 2016 in the publication’s annual A-List Awards of more than 150 local leaders in dining, nightlife, shopping, and culture. “We know she led Boston’s Handel & Haydn society to great success, even wooing those elusive Millennials,” the unsigned article states. “She’s Québecois and a Francophone. She plays viola de gamba. She’s full of surprises: She practiced tax law before she managed orchestras. She’s got quite the stash of heavy metal records. She also gamely accepted a baseball from [St. Louis Cardinals mascot] Fredbird last fall and threw out a ceremonial first pitch (a strike—she practiced). Her roadmap for the symphony? Still in the works. Once it’s fully public, we have no doubt it’ll reflect her best qualities: grand but grounded, classy but never dull, methodical but still wide open to serendipity.”
