On June 25, Connecticut’s New Haven Symphony Orchestra will join with performers from the Cirque Mechanics troupe to give a free outdoor performance at New Haven Green. As the orchestra performs music by Bizet, Copland, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and Vivaldi, acrobats from Cirque Mechanics will dangle and twirl from a pedal-powered apparatus called the Gantry Bike. The performance caps the two-week annual citywide Festival of Arts and Ideas held throughout downtown New Haven every June, which includes dance, music, and theater events, most of them free. The aim of the festival, established in 1996, is “to gather world-class artists and thinkers from around the globe, showcasing the city and the state as a major arts destination.” William Boughton is New Haven Symphony’s music director.
