Orchestras in San Luis Obispo, California and New Bedford, Massachusetts have announced music director searches during the 2016-17 season. The San Luis Obispo Symphony will audition its five music director finalists, beginning in October with Andrew Sewell and continuing throughout the season with José-Luis Novo, Nan Washburn, David Handel, and Rei Hotoda. After each concert, season subscribers will be invited to complete a survey about the music director candidate, with survey results used as part of the selection process. The winning candidate will replace Michael Nowak, who departed as music director of the San Luis Obispo Symphony in 2015. Four music director candidates will lead the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra during the 2016-17 season: Christopher James Lees, David Amado, Yaniv Dinur, and Dirk Meyer. David MacKenzie retired as the New Bedford Symphony’s music director at the end of the 2015-16 season.
