Kentucky’s Louisville Orchestra has announced the appointment of GABRIEL LEFKOWITZ as concertmaster and JULIA NOONE as assistant concertmaster. Also announced was the retirement of bass trombonist RAYMOND HORTON, a 45-year Louisville Orchestra veteran, at the end of the recently concluded 2015-16 season.
Gabriel Lefkowitz, whose appointment to the Fanny and Charles Horner Concertmaster Chair takes effect in September, will succeed MICHAEL W. DAVIS, who retired from the orchestra in 2015 after 32 years of service. Lefkowitz is concertmaster of the Knoxville (Tenn.) Symphony Orchestra, and he will conclude his tenure there during the 2016-17 season while serving concurrently as concertmaster in Louisville. Also a conductor and composer for film and video games, he holds a master’s degree in violin performance from the Juilliard School and a bachelor’s degree in music and economics from Columbia University.
Julia Noone takes up the assistant concertmaster post after serving in that role on an interim basis since January 2016. She was previously a fellow in the New World Symphony, where she regularly served as concertmaster and won NWS’s 2014-15 concerto competition. Noone has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Spoleto Festival USA, Idaho’s Sun Valley Summer Symphony, and as guest associate principal with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. She is a graduate of New England Conservatory and also studied at Tanglewood Music Center and at Germany’s Moritzburg Academy and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.
