The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra is reporting a small budget surplus, following fourteen years of annual deficits. In the 2015-16 season, the WVSO saw increases in subscription sales, single-ticket attendance, and individual donations. WVSO President Joe Tackett noted in a press release, “Through the hard work of our board, staff, and most importantly, our musicians, the WVSO has achieved what many saw as impossible: a financially healthy, thriving arts organization with a growing audience and an engaged, forward-looking vision.” The WVSO, based in Charleston, presents classical, pops, and chamber-music concerts annually throughout West Virginia. The orchestra’s music education arm includes programs in Kanawha County Schools, Young People’s Concerts at West Virginia elementary schools, and support for the West Virginia Youth Symphony.
