Among the many conservatories and university music programs offering free concerts this coming season is Boston’s New England Conservatory, which has announced 1,000 free performances and events leading up to the school’s 150th anniversary in 2017. A pair of concerts on September 18 at Jordan Hall will celebrate violinist and longtime faculty member Miriam Fried’s 70th birthday with Fried performing all six Bach solo sonatas and partitas. Other season events include NEC Philharmonia concerts led by Director of Orchestras Hugh Wolff, Boston Symphony Orchestra Assistant Conductor Ken-David Masur, guest conductor Andrew Litton, and guest conductor/NEC alumnus Joshua Weilerstein. NEC’s conductorless chamber orchestra will perform three concerts focusing on Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg. Also planned are three concerts at NEC as part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Insights Series “Do You Hear What I Hear?” featuring new works by Eric Nathan, Timo Andres, Julian Anderson, and Sofia Gubaidulina. (The NEC concerts immediately precede each composer’s Thursday-night BSO concert.)
