The Des Moines Symphony will perform a free concert on opening night of the Iowa State Fair on August 11 at 6:30 p.m. Music Director Joseph Giunta will lead a program featuring Great American Songbook selections with Broadway singer Hugh Panaro (Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), patriotic numbers including “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” and Tchaikovsky’s Overture to 1812. The orchestra will also perform Peter Hamlin’s Symphony on a Stick, which was inspired by the State Fair and had its world premiere at the Des Moines Civic Center in September 2015. The Symphony on a Stick performance will incorporate cinematography on a large screen above the orchestra.
