“Jessica Morel has been named the assistant conductor of the Winston-Salem Symphony, effective Aug. 24,” writes Lynn Felder in Thursday’s (8/11) Winston-Salem Journal (North Carolina). “Morel is the first female assistant conductor in the symphony’s 70-year history.” She was most recently director of orchestral activities at the University of Evansville and conductor for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s Lollipops concerts. Morel has served as assistant conductor of the Hot Springs (Ark.) Music Festival, assistant conductor of the Lake Symphony Orchestra (Lewisville, Tex.), and apprentice conductor with Texas’s Plano and Irving symphonies. “A Los Angeles native, Morel received her master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Nevada … and is working on a doctorate in orchestral conducting at the University of North Texas. She has a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, where she studied flute.” She will direct the Winston-Salem Symphony’s Plugged-In Pops and Discovery concerts as well as its youth orchestra. “ ‘[Jessica] brings a great wealth of energy, enthusiasm and education experience, as well as a wonderful depth of musicality,’ said Robert Moody, the music director for the symphony. ‘Our Youth Orchestras program, our professional orchestra, and our entire community will be the great beneficiaries of Jessica joining our team.’ ”
