“Opera Orlando will stage a one-night-only benefit concert to help strengthen the community in light of the Pulse nightclub shootings,” with all performers donating their services, writes Matthew J. Palm in Thursday’s (8/11) Orlando Sentinel (Florida). “ ‘One Voice Orlando: A Celebration in Song’ will be performed Sept. 11 at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts downtown…. ‘It became clear that our art form had to become part of this effort to respond to the pain, sadness and confusion caused by the death and injury of so many innocent people,’ said Gabriel Preisser, executive and artistic director of Opera Orlando…. Composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell, both winners of the Pulitzer Prize, have collaborated on ‘Light Shall Lift Us,’ a choral work that will debut at the event.” Baritone Sherrill Milnes will be among the hosts, and singers include sopranos Ana Maria Martinez and Sarah Joy Miller, tenors Javier Abreu and Chad Johnson, and baritone Mark Walters. The Orlando Philharmonic is donating its music library’s services and collection of music, and the Plaza Live rehearsal space. Several musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic will play at the concert. The concert will benefit local health and human-services agencies.
