The American Composers Orchestra has awarded Carlos Simon its 2016 Underwood Commission, which comes with a $15,000 prize and a performance by the ACO at New York City’s Symphony Space on May 23, 2017. Simon was one of seven finalists at the ACO’s 25th Underwood New Music Readings in June 2016 and won first prize with his Plagues of Egypt. Paul Frucht won the audience choice award for his composition Dawn; he will compose an original mobile phone ringtone available free to all who voted. The Underwood New Music Readings are part of EarShot, the national orchestral composition discovery network. EarShot activities include new music readings and other composer development programs with orchestras around the country. EarShot is coordinated by ACO in collaboration with American Composers Forum, the League of American Orchestras, and New Music USA.
