One hundred students from six El Sistema-inspired music programs in New Jersey will participate in the second annual El Sistema New Jersey Alliance summer camp at the Princeton-Blairstown Center in Blairstown from August 17 to 19. The six programs represented are the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s NJSO CHAMPS (Newark); Paterson Music Project (Paterson); Union City Music Project (Union City); Sonic Explorations (Orange); Trenton Music Makers (Trenton); and Sister Cities Girlchoir (Camden/Philadelphia). Over three days students will participate in music rehearsals with teaching artists from each program and perform a concert on the final day for parents and friends. Students also will participate in teambuilding activities such as hiking, adventure courses, and campfire sing-alongs. The Alliance, formed in 2014, presents an annual showcase of musicians in its affiliated programs at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, and supports free concerts in each program’s local community throughout the season. Fifty students in grades 3 to 8 participate in the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s CHAMPS (Character, Achievement, and Music Project) intensive music education program at University Heights Charter School in Newark, launched in 2013.
