California’s Long Beach Symphony has appointed ECKART PREU to a three-year term as music director, effective with the 2017-18 season. He will serve as music director designate in 2016-17. Preu has been music director of the Spokane (Wash.) Symphony since 2004, and for the last eleven years has also been music director of the Stamford (Conn.) Symphony. He will step down from the latter post at the end of the 2016-17 season. From 1997 to 2004 Preu was assistant conductor of the New York City-based American Symphony Orchestra. A native of Erfurt, Germany, he received a master’s degree in conducting from the Hochschule für Musik in Weimar, and later trained at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris and at the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford (Conn.).
