The British publication Gramophone “announced 12 winners of its prestigious annual Gramophone Awards for the year’s top recordings on Aug. 22, and Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra made the cut,” writes Steve Smith in Tuesday’s (8/23) Boston Globe (subscription required). “The BSO earned the Orchestral Award for its CD of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, released in 2015 on the Deutsche Grammophon label and already a Grammy winner in February. Nelsons claimed an additional prize, winning the Contemporary Award for his recording of Hans Abrahamsen’s ‘Let Me Tell You’ with soprano Barbara Hannigan and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, issued by Winter & Winter. (Nelsons and Hannigan performed that work with the BSO at Symphony Hall in February.) The awards—selected by Gramophone music critics as well as a cross-section of retailers, broadcasters, administrators, and performers—are widely viewed as the most prestigious and influential among the classical-music community. The 2016 awards will be distributed during a ceremony in London on Sept. 15, where one of the 12 winners will be named Recording of the Year. The ceremony will be live-streamed on the Medici TV website.”
