Two additions to the musician roster were recently announced by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra: CHRISTOPHER OLKA, principal tuba; and REBECCA BARNES, section viola.
Christopher Olka goes to Cincinnati from Seattle, where he was principal tuba for the Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera and an instructor in tuba and euphonium at the University of Washington. Olka has also served as principal tuba with Japan’s Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra. He received a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Central Florida and a master’s from the Juilliard School.
Rebecca Barnes had held a temporary post with the Cincinnati Symphony since 2012, and was previously third-chair violist with the Louisville Orchestra. Barnes received a bachelor’s degree and completed graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she also taught viola from 2011 to 2016. She pursued further study at Aspen Music Festival and School.
