“First the DSO created the Max. Now get ready for the Cube,” writes Mark Stryker in Sunday’s (9/11) Detroit Free Press (Michigan). “The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is expected to announce Monday that it is renaming the 475-seat recital hall inside the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center and promises to dramatically ramp up programming in the space with an eclectic, multi-genre mix of music.… The former Music Box will be rechristened as the Cube—officially the Peter D. & Julie F. Cummings Cube—in honor of the couple’s cumulative $10 million of lifetime giving to the orchestra…. Chris Harrington, who has been managing the orchestra’s Paradise Jazz Series, has assumed the role of curator (managing director) for the space…. Possible programs … include jazz, hip-hop, contemporary classical music … yoga with musical accompaniment and artist-curated events [some of which] already happen in the space under the DSO’s ‘Mix @ the Max’ and ‘Om @ the Max’ (yoga) banners. But the Cube promises to up the frequency of events from 10 to 13 per year to about 30…. The formal launch of the Cube is scheduled for Monday night with a performance by Red Baraat, an eight-piece band from Brooklyn.”
