“The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra officially kicks off its 137th season this week, as music director David Robertson conducts both the free annual Forest Park concert and the opening weekend performances,” writes Sarah Bryan Miller in Sunday’s (9/11) St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The season includes “a complete cycle of Beethoven piano concertos, a semi-staged opera [Der Fliegende Holländer], assorted premieres and plenty of orchestral favorites…. Music director David Robertson … has an additional theme this season: the ‘fascinating way that all the ideas of flight come together.’ … 2017 marks the 90th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s historic transatlantic flight. The opening weekend concerts of the 2016-2017 season celebrate that flight and its connection to St. Louis, with Kurt Weill’s ‘The Flight of Lindbergh’ … a cantata for narrator, soloists, chorus and orchestra.… The SLSO will mark the 15th anniversary of 9/11 with John Adams’ ‘On the Transmigration of Souls’ in [November], pairing it with the Mozart Requiem. [Two April] concerts will include the American premiere of a new piece called ‘Jerusalem,’ by Georges Lentz. Based on Blake’s poem, it’s dedicated to the victims of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which disappeared in March 2014 in the Indian Ocean.”
