“The New York Philharmonic will open Oklahoma State University’s $60 million performing arts center in October 2019 with performances and educational events for students and the community,” writes Kathryn McNutt in Friday’s (9/30) Oklahoman (Oklahoma City). “OSU and the Philharmonic announced the residency partnership in advance of Saturday’s groundbreaking for the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts at Oklahoma State University…. In addition to multiple performances at the McKnight Center conducted by Jaap van Zweden—who will become the Philharmonic’s music director in the 2018-19 season—the residency will include educational opportunities for OSU students with Philharmonic musicians and management, such as master classes, audition workshops and lectures. ‘It will bring the full array of resources of the Philharmonic to bear,’ [Philharmonic President Matthew] VanBesien said. ‘Our musicians are superstars.’ VanBesien said he will work with OSU leaders to tailor a residency program specifically for the university that will be rewarding for both his musicians and the full student body, not just music majors…. The 93,000-square-foot performing arts center … will include a 1,100-seat performance hall, 222-seat recital hall and an outdoor amphitheater with a large viewing screen for broadcasting performances from the hall or anywhere in the world.”
