The Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra in Washington opened its 2016–17 concert season on November 6 and 7 with concerts by several of its ensembles at Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center in Renton, Washington. Concerts on November 6 featured the Cadet String Orchestra, Debut String Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Flute Choir, Flute Orchestra, Philharmonia, and Youth Symphony. On November 7, the Premiere Orchestra and Sinfonia perform at 7:00 pm, with a free pre-concert talk at 6:45 by KING FM classical music host Steve Reeder. November’s concerts feature Bernstein’s West Side Story, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, selections from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Ramon Aquabella’s Danse Espagnole, Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite, and Kirt Mosier’s Two Scenes from the Hollow. A second program in March by the Premiere Orchestra will showcase the winner of BYSO’s annual Concerto Competition, and the final May program will feature Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and movie music including John Williams’s score to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Trudi Jackson is the BYSO’s executive director, and Teresa Metzger Howe serves as music director.
