“Wow. Just wow. Pianist Yuja Wang just took apart and rebuilt Mozart’s Rondo alla Turca in a truly unusual way” during her encore last week with the Berlin Philharmonic, writes Mike Rinzel on Tuesday (11/29) at New York classical radio station WQXR. “Wang played the captivating rendition, which mixes elements of jazz and even a dash of honky tonk, as her encore…. The video was posted on Facebook a week ago and has quickly become widely popular. It has been shared among 300,000 Facebook users and viewed 18 million times in the past few days.” Wang was the subject of a September 5 profile in the New Yorker by Janet Malcolm, and she was also chosen as Musical America’s 2017 Artist of the Year. Wang will receive that award at a December ceremony in New York City, along with Musical America’s other 2017 honorees: Andrew Norman (Composer of the Year), Eighth Blackbird (Ensemble of the Year), Susanna Mälkki (Conductor of the Year), and bass-baritone Eric Owens (Vocalist of the Year).
