“The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra has teamed up with the Capri Theater and Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church to stage a pair of concerts that celebrate the North Minneapolis community through music,” writes Ross Raihala in Saturday’s (1/21) Pioneer Press (St. Paul, MN). “Dubbed the Northside Celebration, the shows will take place at 4 p.m. March 18 and 19 at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Minneapolis. Tickets are free…. The concerts will spotlight the specially formed Northside Celebration Choir, featuring vocalists of the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church choir and members of other neighboring choirs. The program includes ‘For Every Mountain’ by Kurt Carr and other gospel works, with audience participation encouraged; ‘Strum’ by acclaimed American composer Jessie Montgomery; and the world premiere of ‘True North,’ a work for choir and chamber orchestra commissioned for the event and composed by North Minneapolis resident Timothy C. Takach with lyrics from hip-hop artist Desdamona. ‘There are a number of different cultures living and thriving here in North Minneapolis,’ said Dennis Spears, artistic director of the Capri’s Legends Series. ‘Through this concert, we will bring together a rainbow of residents and shine a powerful ray of hope and love all across this community.’ ”
