“The Philharmonia Orchestra will celebrate Esa-Pekka Salonen’s tenth anniversary as principal conductor and artistic advisor and will explore the music of Soviet Russia with Vladimir Ashkenazy during the 2017/18 season,” writes Katy Wright in Thursday’s (1/26) Rhinegold.co.uk (London). Salonen will conduct “seven programmes, closing the season with a gala concert on his 60th birthday, 30 June 2017.… Conductor laureate Vladimir Ashkenazy will join the Philharmonia to explore the music of Soviet Russia on the centenary of the Bolshevik Revolution in Voices of Revolution: Russia 1917. The four-concert series will feature a live screening of Battleship Potemkin and music by Mosolov, Gliere, Shostakovich and Prokofiev, concluding with Prokofiev’s Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the Revolution. Other highlights include two concerto performances and a post-concert performance of works inspired by Finnish traditional music by Pekka Kuusisto; an all-Dvořák programme from Paavo Järvi; and a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Philharmonia Chorus, with Edward Gardner conducting Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast.… The Philharmonia also announced the return of 360 Experience. The virtual reality experience featuring Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting Sibelius’s fifth symphony will be open to the public for free.”
