“The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s 2017-18 season will start with a Mozart celebration, close with a collaboration with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and include everything from world premieres to great choral works to Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ in between,” writes Sarah Bryan Miller in Friday’s (2/3) St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Next season marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Powell Symphony Hall, the former movie palace once known as the St. Louis Theater. … Also on the schedule: the SLSO’s fourth California tour…. There’s a good mix of programming…. Classics include … Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Respighi’s ‘Pines of Rome,’ Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’ and lots of Tchaikovsky and Mozart…. U.S. premieres [include] Peter Ruzicka’s ‘Elegie: Remembrance for Orchestra’ and Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür’s ‘Soslastalgia,’ a piccolo concerto that will feature the SLSO’s Ann Choomack as soloist…. Getting their first performances with the orchestra are Thomas Adès ‘Powder Her Face’ Suite, Steven Mackey’s ‘Mnemosyne’s Pool’ and Christopher Rouse’s ‘Bump.’ … The Live at Powell Hall pops series will return (the schedule will be announced in the spring), as will … ‘A Gospel Christmas,’ with guest artist Diane Reeves and the annual New Year’s Eve concert.”
