The California Symphony (Walnut Creek, Calif.) has appointed KATHERINE BALCH to a three-year term as Young American Composer-in-Residence, effective August 1, 2017. Her music has been commissioned and performed by such ensembles as the Albany (N.Y.) Symphony Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony, Ensemble Intercontemporain, International Contemporary Ensemble, and American Modern Ensemble. Balch holds bachelor’s degrees from the Tufts University/New England Conservatory joint degree program and a master’s degree from Yale School of Music. Currently a D.M.A. candidate at Columbia University, she teaches in the preparatory division of Bard College Conservatory (Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and in a summer program for young composers at the Walden School (Dublin, N.H.).
