California’s Santa Rosa Symphony has announced its 2017-18 season, the orchestra’s 90th, featuring concerts led by five music director candidates to succeed Bruno Ferrandis, who steps down in May 2018 after his twelfth season leading the orchestra. Ferrandis will lead the orchestra’s April and May programs, featuring Prokofiev’s film score Alexander Nevsky for Mezzo-Soprano and Chorus, with the SSU Symphonic Chorus; the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde; John Adams’s The Dharma at Big Sur for Electric Violin, with soloist Tracy Silverman; Michal Rataj’s Temporis for Cymbalom and Orchestra, with soloist Jan Mikusek; and Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. The candidates for music director include Francesco Lecce-Chong, who leads an October program of Mason Bates’s Garages of the Valley for Orchestra, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with soloist Joyce Yang. The remaining four candidates will lead concerts in November (Mei-Ann Chen), December (Andrew Grams), January (Graeme Jenkins), and February (Michael Christie). Musicologist Katyleen Asbo will interview each of the five candidates in pre-concert events.
