“Boston investment management firm Eaton Vance will be the new presenting sponsor of the Boston Pops’ annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks celebration on the Esplanade, and new media partner and sponsor Bloomberg LP will broadcast the event on cable television, radio and online,” writes Donna Goodison in Wednesday’s (3/8) Boston Herald. “Both companies made initial three-year commitments to back the ‘Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular’ through 2019…. Event co-founder David Mugar stepped down as executive producer after four-plus decades following the 2016 show…. The event … typically attracts 500,000 people to the Hatch Memorial Shell. Boston’s Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. ended its 10-year role as presenting sponsor in 2015, and Mugar ponied up the $2 million for last year’s celebration after no new backers emerged. Eaton Vance and Bloomberg initially approached the Boston Symphony Orchestra … about working together, according to Kim Noltemy, BSO chief operating and communications officer, … ‘but this was the first time that there were serious discussions about [Bloomberg] becoming a broadcast partner,’ she said.… Pop artist Andy Grammer and rock singer-songwriter/guitarist Melissa Etheridge will be featured performers at the July 3 and 4 concerts.”
