Malika Green, director of steel orchestras and community engagement coordinator at Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, has received the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program’s Global Scholar Grant from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Green will conduct research and give lectures on international steelpan music education programs in Trinidad and Tobago, Toronto, Canada, and London, United Kingdom. Her travel will include a seven-week research trip to Trinidad in fall 2017, a five-week research trip to Toronto in spring 2018, and an eleven-week lecture and research trip to the United Kingdom in fall 2018. Green currently oversees CYSO’s Steel Orchestra program, founded in 2013, which includes four on-site steelpan ensembles for students from across the Chicago region. CYSO steel ensembles have performed at the Grant Park Music Festival and have visited Chicago public schools during their annual “Steel Tour.” In addition, Green directs CYSO’s Community Engagement programs, which includes the new Neighborhood Steel Band Program serving students in under-resourced Chicago neighborhoods.
