“After an exhaustive and thorough search and extensive audition season—where four finalists conducted as guests—the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra announced its new musical director,” writes Seth Muller in Tuesday’s (4/4) Arizona Daily Sun (Flagstaff). “Charles Latshaw will fill the vacancy left by Elizabeth Schulze, who has … handled the role of the music director for the past nine years…. Latshaw will make his first public appearance as the new music director next Saturday, April 8, as part of the FSO ‘Dancing For Our Stars’ symphony gala dinner, dance and auction.… His first performance with the orchestra will be on Sept. 29 for the 2017-18 season-opening concert…. FSO Board President Stan Sutherland chaired the search committee, which was composed of FSO musicians, board members and leaders from the community…. Currently the music director of the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra in Colorado, Latshaw also has served as the director of the Kent/Blossom Music Festival in Ohio and the Kent State University Orchestra…. He has performed with jazz bands as a trumpet player, vocalist and band leader [and] appeared in acting and singing roles [in Europe and] the United States…. Schulze gives her final concert for Flagstaff on April 21.”
