Symphony Tacoma will open its 2017-18 season with an all-Leonard Bernstein program on October 21 featuring On the Waterfront and the Symphonic Dances and Suite No. 2 from West Side Story, led by Music Director Sarah Ioannides. Symphony Tacoma Voices will perform, and West Side Story’s seven roles will be filled by soloists from the community, selected by auditions being held this spring. The orchestra will perform the U.S. premiere of Swedish composer Marie Samuelsson’s “The Eros Effect and Solidarity” from her Love Trilogy; Ioannides led the world premiere in 2016 by the Nordic Chamber Orchestra. Also planned in 2017-18 are Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, Brahms’s Symphony No. 1, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. There will be two Handel Messiah performances in December, and the Tacoma Youth Chorus will perform a separate December holiday program that includes a singalong. Soprano Kelly Cae Hogan and Symphony Tacoma Voices will join the orchestra for a program of Wagner and Poulenc in May.
