The Des Moines Symphony’s final 2016-17 season concerts this weekend will feature Michael Daugherty’s American Gothic, accompanied by a new film celebrating painter Grant Wood’s depictions of Iowa. Music Director Joseph Giunta will lead the May 13 and 14 concerts, which also will include Ravel’s Bolero and Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1, with Matt Haimovitz as soloist. Daugherty’s American Gothic was commissioned by Orchestra Iowa, which premiered it in Cedar Rapids in 2013. The work’s three movements are inspired by the paintings of Grant Wood, an Iowa resident; Daugherty is also a native of the state.
