“The Toledo Symphony Orchestra named noted Canadian conductor-composer Alain Trudel as its new music director this morning,” writes Mike Pearson in Friday’s (6/9) Toledo Blade (Ohio). “TSO President and CEO Zak Vassar introduced Trudel at a morning press conference.” Trudel replaces Stefan Sanderling, who stepped down earlier this year. “Vassar said Trudel received strong support from the orchestra’s musicians, a search committee led by TSO trustee chairman Randy Oostra, and symphony administrators. He said the Montreal native’s ‘joy for music is obvious…. He was a unanimous choice.’ Trudel, who turns 51 on Tuesday … is currently Music Director of l’Orchestre Symphonique de Laval in Quebec, Principal Youth and Family Conductor with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ontario, Principal Guest Conductor of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, and Guest Musical Adviser for the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. A trombonist by training, Trudel, first started playing at age 12 and made his professional debut at age 18. As a guest conductor, he last led the TSO in a pair of Classics concerts in April…. Trudel will serve as Music Director Designate for the next year. He will officially assume his duties on July 1, 2018.”
