“Jonathan Martin is the new president of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra,” reports Janelle Gelfand in Wednesday’s (6/14) Cincinnati Enquirer. “Martin, 60, a native of Atlanta, is coming from Dallas, where he has served as president and CEO of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 2012. He also served for nine years as general manager of the Cleveland Orchestra,” and led the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra from 2008-12. “He begins his contract, which is open-ended, in September.” Martin succeeds Trey Devey, who “announced he was leaving in October to head the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. The vote [for Martin] was unanimous at the board of directors’ meeting last Thursday, said Francie Hiltz, board chair.… Besides performing as the symphony and the Pops, it is the official orchestra of the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet and Cincinnati May Festival. Under a shared services agreement, the new president will also be president of the May Festival.… With its subsidiary, Music and Event Management Inc. (MEMI), which presents touring artists” at regional venues, “the orchestra has a total annual operating budget of $60 million.” Louis Langrée is music director of the Cincinnati Symphony and John Morris Russell is conductor of the Cincinnati Pops.
