The Albany Symphony will perform seven world premieres from July 2 to 8 in communities along the Erie Canal as part of Water Music NY, New York State’s Erie Canal bicentennial celebration. The free concerts will be performed canal-side or aboard a barge and feature works by emerging composers who have spent time in their host communities. The composers are Daniel Schlosberg, whose new work will be performed July 2 in Albany; Annika Socolofsky (July 3, Schenectady), Angelica Negrón (July 4, Amsterdam), Benjamin Wallace (July 5, Little Falls), Ryan Chase (July 6, Baldwinsville), Loren Loiacono (July 7, Brockport), and David Mallamud (July 8, Lockport). The Erie Canal bicentennial falls on the tricentennial of Handel’s Water Music, first performed on London’s River Thames, and the Albany Symphony will perform selections from Water Music every night of the concert series, in addition to the original compositions and American favorites. Other performers in the festival include the Empire State Youth Orchestra’s Jazz Ensemble, Skidmore College Storytellers’ Institute, Schenectady Symphony Orchestra, Mohawk Valley Chorus, Mohawk Valley Choral Society, Syracuse Pops Chorus, and Golden Eagle String Band.
