“Elim Chan, the first female winner of the London Symphony’s Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, is to be the new principal guest conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra,” states an unsigned report on Tuesday’s (6/20) MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). “The Hong-Kong-born conductor … follows Thomas Sondergard, who was announced as the next music director of the RSNO in May, and former Principal Guest Conductors Marin Alsop, Gary Bertini, and Paavo Berglund. Chan, currently a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted the RSNO for the first time last February and was invited back two weeks later to step in for Conductor Laureate Neeme Jarvi, who withdrew for stated personal reasons.… RSNO CEO Krishna Thiagarajan remembers her debut as being ‘of such chemistry that the musicians immediately called for her re-engagement. This led to an onstage relationship that can accurately be described as inspiring and full of energy.’ Chan, who has conducted the Mariinsky Opera on tour, is the new chief conductor of Sweden’s NorrlandsOperan.”
