The St. Louis Symphony maintains a blog entitled “Stories from Backstage,” where recently eleven-year-old musician Madeline De Geest revealed that she is interested in becoming a conductor after seeing a 2016 performance by the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra led by SLSO Resident Conductor Gemma New. De Geest approached New after the performance for an autograph, and New “also gave me her conducting stick,” she says. In 2017, New invited De Geest to a St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra rehearsal, and De Geest brought a violin and music folder. In a video posted at the blog, New commented, “She has so much energy and potential. She reminded me of myself when I was that age.”
