Make Music, a free celebration of music around the world on June 21, the summer solstice, was launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique. Ten years ago, the festival crossed the Atlantic with the debut of Make Music New York, and other cities across the continent have launched their own participatory Make Music celebrations. On June 21, 2016, grassroots groups in 38 North American cities organized 3,238 free musical events at 1,078 locations, all on a single day. Make Music takes place on streets, parks, plazas, and porches and is open to amateur and professional musicians who want to take part.
