“The Hawaii Symphony Orchestra celebrated the conclusion of its fifth season, and current fiscal year, by meeting a $150,000 matching challenge by the family of its board chairman, the owner of Hawaii’s ABC Stores, with the help of donors,” writes Billy McGivern in Thursday’s (7/6) Pacific Business News (Honolulu). “Paul Kosasa and his extended family laid down the challenge a month before the HSO’s fiscal year ended. By the end of June this had been matched—and exceeded—by 271 gifts received throughout the month…. The Hawaii Symphony Orchestra’s sixth Halekulani Masterworks season opens on Oct. 1 and will feature artists such as Lang Lang, Leonard Slatkin, Jeff Peterson and Olga Kern.… ‘Our orchestra has never sounded better, and its excellence is certainly being reflected by this kind of support,’ newly elected HSO President Michael Titterton said…. Besides its normal campaign, HSO efforts are underway to increase business and corporate support, as well as to increase the number of monthly donors, a new area of fundraising for the organization.” HSO Executive Director Jonathan Parrish said the Kosasa family’s “timely challenge motivated hundreds of donors to meet this goal and help prepare the HSO for our next exciting season.”
