“For the first time in more than two decades, the Houston Symphony will launch a multi-country tour in Europe,” writes Wei-Huan Chen in Thursday’s (7/13) Houston Chronicle. “The symphony announced Wednesday that it will embark on a four-country, eight-city performance tour from March 9-19, 2018, in a showcase of Shostakovich, Dvořák and Leonard Bernstein, featuring Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada as conductor and Grammy-winning Hilary Hahn on the violin…. Funded by 34 foundations, individuals and corporate donors, the 2018 European tour is being billed as sending a global message that Houston is ‘the Cultural Capital of the South,’ said outgoing executive director Mark Hanson. The tour begins at Klarafestival 2018 … in Brussels, Belgium, then continues onto performances at Philharmonie Essen and Konzerthaus Berlin in Germany. After stops in Warsaw, Poland, and Vienna, Austria, the symphony will return to Germany for a three-performance engagement.… Among the pieces slated for the tour are Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 and songs from Bernstein’s ‘West Side Story’ and ‘On the Town’ as part of a celebration of the American composer’s 100th birthday. Houston Symphony will perform a version of its European tour repertoire in a series of concerts” in Houston in February 2018.
