Since June 27, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has been performing its annual free outdoor concert series throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area, with the final two performances set for July 19 and 28. On July 19 at Clarence Town Park in Clarence, N.Y., BPO Resident Conductor Stefan Sanders will lead the orchestra in music by John Williams, Duke Ellington, George M. Cohan, and John Philip Sousa, among others. On July 28, Music Director JoAnn Falletta will conduct a free concert, accompanied by a light show, on the South Lawn of the newly renovated Richardson Olmsted Campus in Buffalo. The concert marks the successful completion of the first phase of redevelopment of the 145-year-old National Historic Landmark into a hotel and architecture center; the original structure was completed in the late 1800s as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane. The concert is meant to “spotlight the historical function of the Richardson as a place of healing by featuring music by famous composers who lived with mental illness and created great works, including Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Handel, among others.”
