The Virginia Symphony Orchestra, based in the southeastern portion of the state, is in the midst of its annual Symphony by the Sea series of free concerts on the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Resident Conductor Benjamin Rous led the opening concert on July 26 of music from films including Les Misérables, Dances with Wolves, Legends of the Fall, Mission Impossible, and Titanic. Three remaining performances on July 27, August 17, and September 7 will feature excerpts from Die Fledermaus, Swan Lake, Spiderman, and Star Wars; patriotic music by Sousa, Copland, and Gershwin; and music marking the Naval Station Norfolk’s centennial, including Victory at Sea, Midway March, and Hands Across the Sea. JoAnn Falletta is the VSO’s music director, and Karen Philion is president and CEO.
