“The Symphony Society of San Antonio, founded in 1939 by first conductor Max Reiter, will cease to operate the San Antonio Symphony as of Sept. 1,” writes David Hendricks in Wednesday’s (7/19) San Antonio Express-News (Texas). “The Symphony Society will be replaced by a new nonprofit to be called Symphonic Music for San Antonio … organized by some of the symphony’s biggest funders, [said] Tobin Endowment Chairman J. Bruce Bugg…. The new organization has a goal to operate the already-planned 2017-18 season under conductor Sebastian Lang-Lessing that starts … Sept. 16…. One of the new organization’s first tasks will be to negotiate a labor contract with the [orchestra’s] 72 musicians … Their current contract expires Aug. 31. The board of the new organization will be led by Bugg. Dya Campos, [Texas supermarket chain] H-E-B’s governmental and public affairs director, will serve as president and J. Tullos Wells, managing director of the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, will be the board vice president, treasurer and secretary…. The transition to a new organization followed several months of discussions …. The new organization is in ‘a hurry up offense’ to create a new board, plus a community advisory board, to oversee the upcoming concert season, [said] Bugg.”
