“Deborah Spar, who, before becoming Lincoln Center’s president late last year, held the same position at Barnard College for nine years, has created a new position for a trusted deputy,” writes Susan Elliott in Monday’s (7/24) MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). “On Friday, she announced the appointment of Bret Silver as chief strategy and external relations office. Silver is the current vice president for development, alumnae relations, and career development at Barnard College. He will report directly to Spar, overseeing fundraising, marketing, communications, government relations, and international outreach.… Silver’s experience, said Spar, ‘will be a great asset as we focus on key initiatives, including expanding and diversifying our audiences and reimagining David Geffen Hall.’ ” Geffen Hall is the home of the New York Philharmonic. “Silver is credited with raising over $300 million for Barnard’s capital campaign. Prior to his six years at Barnard, he was chief external relations officer at Jazz at Lincoln Center. His background also includes fundraising at the Whitney Museum of Art and 11 years at Carnegie Hall in marketing and development. Silver holds a BA from Colgate University.”
