The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has announced four conducting appointments. Former Dudamel Fellow PAOLO BORTOLAMEOLLI has been named assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the 2017-18 season, and the three conductors who will participate in the 2017-18 Dudamel Fellowship Program are TIANYI LU, RUTH REINHARDT, and JONATHON HEYWARD.

Paolo Bortolameolli will serve as cover conductor for Gustavo Dudamel and guest conduct throughout the orchestra’s subscription season and on tour. He will also conduct youth concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall on February 24 and March 10, 2018. Bortolameolli is 2017 guest conductor in residence at YOA Orchestra of the Americas. In 2014-15 he was cover conductor for Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. In 2013, he made his debut conducting Chile’s Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago in The Rite of Spring, earning him an award from the Chilean Critics Association.

The three Dudamel Fellows will work alongside LA Phil Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as visiting artists and conductors, and will work with students in key LA Phil education programs. The program for each of the Fellows involves conducting Los Angeles Philharmonic youth concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall, participating as cover conductors, and serving as mentors through participation in programs such as Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).

Tianyi Lu is assistant conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia and principal conductor of the St. Woolos Players in South Wales, U.K. Last year, Lu was selected out of 320 applicants to attend the Lucerne Festival Masterclass with Bernard Haitink and was chosen out of a field of 150 to participate in the Linda and Mitch Hart Institute for Women Conductors with the Dallas Opera.

Ruth Reinhardt earned her master’s degree in conducting from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Alan Gilbert. She is currently assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and previously was associate conducting fellow of the Taki Concordia program with Marin Alsop, the regular conductor of New York City-based ÆON Ensemble, and a conducting fellow with the Seattle Symphony and Tanglewood Music Center.

Jonathon Heyward is currently assistant conductor of the U.K.’s Hallé Orchestra. Trained as a cellist, Heyward studied conducting at the Boston Conservatory and was assistant conductor for the conservatory’s opera department and the Boston Opera Collaborative from 2012 to 2014. He has conducted the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Chineke! Orchestra in the U.K., and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, among others. In 2017-18 he will conduct the premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s opera Lazarus at the Birmingham Opera Company.
