“Yo-Yo Ma, perhaps the most famous living classical musician, is giving cellists of the Capital Region the chance to join him on the Saratoga Performing Arts Center stage” on August 9, writes Indiana Nash in Thursday’s (7/27) Daily Gazette (Schenectady, N.Y.). “The event—called a PlayIN—is organized and sponsored by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The PlayIN events began in Philadelphia in 2012 as a way to involve amateur musicians within the orchestra. This will be the first time that SPAC has hosted such an event…. Registration is open to cellists of all abilities and ages. Participating musicians will perform works by Breval, J.S. Bach, Schubert, Paganini, Vivaldi, Suzuki and others. The music will be sent to participants no more than 24 hours after they register. The PlayIN performance [precedes] a concert with Yo-Yo Ma and the Philadelphia Orchestra at 8 p.m. that evening. That performance will be conducted by Marin Alsop, music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Yo-Yo Ma will also perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in a program that also includes John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Barber’s Symphony No. 1.”
