“Accomplished student musicians from schools across Central New York will perform under a new name with new leadership beginning with the 2017-2018 season,” writes Linda Loomis in Saturday’s (8/5) Post-Standard (Syracuse, N.Y.). “Now called the Symphoria Youth Orchestra and the Symphoria Youth String Orchestra, the groups are under the umbrella of CNY’s professional symphony orchestra. Christian Capocaccia, newly appointed associate conductor of Symphoria, will also serve as the music director of the Symphoria Youth Orchestras…. In his new role … he will be at the podium for Casual, Spark and Kids series concerts and oversee education events…. Capocaccia will plan programming, manage auditions, and conduct concerts. The purpose of the new configuration is to fully integrate the youth orchestras with the professional orchestra, guest artists and events, he says…. Student musicians will [have] professional musicians from Symphoria as section coaches and mentors. They will also participate in master classes with guest artists, including clarinetist David Shifrin and violinist Chee Yun. Catherine Underhill, managing director of Symphoria, says the move to unite the youth orchestras with the professional orchestra has been in the works for several years.”
