“Supporters of the Longview Symphony Orchestra strung together a different chord Saturday to attract new audiences,” writes Jimmy Isaac in Saturday’s (8/19) Longview News-Journal (Longview, TX). “A free Meet the Conductor event at the Longview Community Center gave music enthusiasts of all ages the chance to indulge in live music, pluck strings of instruments and learn about their local orchestra. The event offered food truck vendors as well as a ‘petting zoo’ of string instruments for children…. ‘Our board’s mindset has been that if we’re not educating or introducing youth to string instruments of any kind, then we’re not really doing our job,’ [Board President Jon Cromer] said while standing at the foyer of the community center auditorium, where Longview Symphony Conductor Gene Moon, concertmaster violinist Jennifer Moon and principal cellist Evgeni Raychev serenaded listeners…. [Said] Moon, ‘I think that the orchestra of the Longview Symphony should be able to reflect its community and be able to embrace all kinds of music.’ … Cromer … noted the symphony’s Link Up Children’s Program, in partnership with Carnegie Hall, lets local school students play in a concert with the symphony next spring.”
