“At least one new player will look familiar to Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concertgoers when the curtain rises on the renovated Music Hall this fall,” writes Janelle Gelfand in Thursday’s (8/24) Cincinnati Enquirer (Ohio). “Robert Sullivan is returning to the orchestra in the role of principal trumpet, a post he held from 2008 to 2013. He will officially begin his tenure in July 2018, after he completes his tenure on the faculty of Northwestern University…. The orchestra’s new principal clarinetist is Ralph Skiano, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Both will be holding principal chairs for both the Cincinnati Symphony and the Pops…. The appointments come as the orchestra fulfills a promise to restore the orchestra to a full complement of 90 tenured players … following the Great Recession…. The orchestra announced three other new hires. Patrick Hodge has won the spot of assistant principal French horn; Hiro Matsuo has been appointed to the cello section, and Charles Morey will perform as acting first assistant concertmaster on a one-year appointment…. Two years ago, the orchestra announced a record, $26 million endowment drive that would allow it to hire 14 new players through 2020 … boosting the size of the orchestra by 18 percent.”
