“Becky Catelinet began playing the clarinet in the fourth grade, when children were given the opportunity to choose an instrument,” writes Kelly Urban in Wednesday’s (9/6) Tribune-Democrat (Johnstown, PA). Catelinet, a clarinetist in the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, “played the clarinet throughout high school and took private lesson to hone her skills. At Carnegie Mellon University, Catelinet continued to study music, completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in clarinet and music education. In 1976, she was asked to step in for a member of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra.… ‘I filled in for several years, and then in the late ’70s I did become the second clarinet chair in the symphony—and I’ve stayed there ever since,’ Catelinet said…. ‘We sit in what I believe is the very best place to be,’ she said. ‘We get to hear everything that’s going on, because we’re right in the heart of the orchestra. I often think as I’m sitting in the middle of that orchestra how lucky I am to be there, and I treasure that I’ve been able to do this for such a long time.’ … She said once a person comes to a symphony performance, she or he will be hooked.”
