The New York Philharmonic’s September 19 season-opening gala concert of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 led by Music Director Designate Jaap van Zweden will be streamed free on Facebook Live. Actor Alec Baldwin will host the live stream at https://www.facebook.com/nyphilharmonic beginning at 7:20 p.m., and the broadcast will be available for on-demand viewing on the Philharmonic’s website, YouTube, and Facebook. The Facebook Live broadcast is supported by a generous grant from the American Orchestras’ Futures Fund, a program of the League of American Orchestras made possible by funding from the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation. Also on September 19, the Empire State Building will be lit in Philharmonic red in celebration of the start of the orchestra’s 2017–18 season. Van Zweden will lead additional concerts during opening week to include the New York premiere of Philip Glass’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, with Katia and Marielle Labèque as soloists, and repeat performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.
