“The New World Symphony, 87 of whose Fellows had to be evacuated due to Hurricane Irma, offered one of its free Wallcasts on Saturday, in a gesture of good will and healing to the residents of Miami Beach,” reads an unsigned Monday (9/18) Musical America article (subscription required). For the Wallcast, a concert recorded by the NWS in 2016, “Sponsors stepped in to provide free water and fresh fruit … and attendees were invited into the air-conditioned, wifi-equipped lobby of the New World Center…. Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and NWS President Howard Herring addressed the gathering and donations were accepted for the Greater Miami Hurricane relief fund. Two of the French horn Fellows opened the proceedings with a brass fanfare. NWS Executive VP and Provost John Kieser reports that a crowd of about 600 showed up, ‘which was amazing considering that people are still dealing with power outages, etc., and that we started promoting this on Friday.’ … Although forced to cancel its free concerts this week, NWS reports that ‘The Fellows will be making their way back to South Florida … over the next few days, and the rest of the … performance schedule will proceed as planned.”
